CONDITIONS OF SERVICE IN THE STRAITS SETTLEMENTS POLICE FORCE.

I-Except under special circumstances, no married man will be enlisted, and permission to marry will only be given after promotion to the rank of Sergeunt.

III.-The pay is $720 per annum rising to $780 after three years' service. IV.-A member of the Police Force will receive exchange compensation on half his pay, so as to make that half worth three shillings to the dollar.

V.-The engagement will be for six years, and is binding upon the person engaging to whatever rank he may be promoted or reduced. Subject to the approval of the Inspector-General of Police, and of the Colonial Surgeon, a member of the Police Force can re-engage for further terms of six

years each.

VI.--Should & Coustable or Sergeant re-engage for a further term of service without leaving the Colony at the expiration of each or any of the terms of six years' service, he will receive a sum equal to three months' pay of his rank by way of bonus, but no bonus will be allowed upon his final retirement.

VII-A Constable or Sergeant who re-engages, and takes a bonus, starts again in the same rank, on a further term of six years, and cannot be granted leave (except for short periods, in the Colony), except ou medical certificate, within that period.

VIII-At the expiration of each term of six years' service a member of the Police Force becomes entitled to a return passage to England:

(#) And he can apply through the Inspector-General of Police for permission to return to the Service within a period not exceeding twelve months, which period may be extended by the Secretary of State for the Colonies on such grounds as may to him appear satisfactory.

(4) Should this application be approved and he be passed as medically fit for further service, he will receive an allowance equivalent to half-pay during his absence and a return passage to the Colony.

(e) On his return, he will be reinstated in his relative position in the Force as

nearly as may be practicable.

Note. In the event of his attaining the rank of Inspector, the foregoing con- dition VIII will not apply to him, but he will be granted leave of absence under the rules stated below *

* Inspectors of Police may be granted half-pay leave under the Colonial Regulations relating to leave, hat will not be granted the vacation leave permissible under those Regulations. half-pay will count as half-time for pension purposes.

Inspectors proceeding on leave uniler the foregoing Regulation may be grauted free second class passagos to and from the Colony, provided that such passages be not granted more than once in seven years.

Free second class passages may also be granted on the same conditions to the wives (if Huropean) and children (not exceeding two in number) of Inspectors and European Sergeants married with leave, subject to the following conditions:

(a) Passage money will only be paid by Government on account of the families of Officers when the family accompanies the Officer.

(6) As a rule, sons over the age of 16 years or daughters over the age of 18 years will not be deemed to be included in the officers' families or in the grant of passage money.

IX.-Inspectors of Police are not entitled to a bonus on re-engagement.

Inspectors, who have been promoted to that rank after having received a bonus ou re-engagement, are not entitled to leave, until the expiration of the period of such re-engagement.

Provided that, upon refunding the bonus, an Inspector may be granted leave as stated in the foot-note on page 2.

X-Provided the conduct of a member of the Police Force shall have been satisfactory, he will be allowed a pension according to such regulations as may, from time to time, be issued by the Colonial Government with the approval of the Secretary of State, the terms of which will be similar to those conceded to permanent members of the Civil Service of the Colony, and will provide for a pension after ten years' service upon the production of the medical certificate of unfitness for service, usual in such cases. He will, however, after fifteen years' service become eligible for a pension of twenty-sixtieths of his annual pay and of one-sixtieth for each additional year's service, without being required to produce a medical certificate of unfitness for service, provided he shall have attained the age of forty-five years.

XL-Should a Member of the Police Force be compelled to retire through ill-health before the ten years, a gratuity of one mouth's pay for each year's service may be granted.

XII-On joining the Service, each man has to provide himself with a uniform

XIII-As a rule, he has to perform eight hours' duty in each twenty-four, but is liable to be called on for extra service.

XIV.-He will have to attend school for four hours a week until he obtains a Certificate of Corupetency in the Malay language, without which he cannot receive promotion in the Force.

XV-He will also be required to attend drill for half-an-hour three or four days a week until he is passed as efficient.

XVI. Each European Constable is provided with free quarters and light; he will not receive rations or any allowance in lieu thereof.

XVII-Free quarters and light are also provided for men married with leave,

and allowances in lien of rations are issued to such married men for their wives and

children at the rate of $4 a month for the wife, and $2 a mouth for each child under

14 years of age. Special allowances are also made to men doing duty at certain

country Stations. The allowances to the wife and children will only be issued so long

as they are actually in the Colony.
